Location
Lumen, building number 100
Lumen means ‘light’ – an excellent name for this extraordinary building. It is located at the entrance of Wageningen campus. Lumen was the first building to be constructed for the new campus. Its design is centred around the building’s users and surroundings. Lumen is characterised by light, natural materials, greenery and water, on the inside as well as on the outside.
About Lumen
Lumen was created by the German architect Stefan Behnisch. He designed it to be a human-friendly building, which gives sensory experiences of the relationship between inside and outside. It provides evidence of the weather, the changing seasons, fresh air and the surrounding natural landscape.
The large pond in the nature garden at Lumen is a rainwater basin connected to the ponds inside. As a result, these remain at the right level without supplementing with tap water. The original idea was that the ponds and vegetation would contribute to a pleasant climate in the offices. However, that proved to be more unruly. Lumen is therefore also connected to WUR's thermal storage ring.
Accessibility
Access to the building requires a valid WURcard.
