Everyone at the table: New report sets out recommendations to transform food sytems by strengthening the science-policy-society interface
Given the many planetary and health challenges associated with contemporary food systems, there is a need for food system transformation. This cannot happen without utilising scientific and other forms of knowledge and strengthening the links between science, policy and society to support food system transformation.
A high-level expert group was established by the European Commission in Feb 2021 to explore the needs, gaps and options to strengthen the international science- policy interface for food systems transformation. The expert group presented their initial findings in July 2021 at the United Nations Food Systems Summit (UNFSS) Science Days in Rome. (See here for FACCE-JPI UNFSS page)
The high-level expert group concluded that science-policy-society interfaces (SPIs) need to be strengthened and expanded. The report sets out three transformation pathways with three specific recommendations per pathway, describing how current SPIs can be strengthened and used to support food system transformation. The core functions of SPIs are set out to engage stakeholders through dialogue, build capacity, ensure open access to data, use forecasting methods and independent assessments reports and create a forum for diplomacy.
